If that doesn't work, try flicking the connection type from Passive the usual to Active. You're more likely to get connection problems in Active mode as that requires the server to initiate a connection to your computer through the incoming firewall.

In Passive mode both connections should be initiated by your computer to the server. You can also run into additional problems with your router if you're using NAT normally the case these days and it doesn't know how to translate FTP traffic correctly.

You should be able to log in regardless of the setting. If SmartFTP is attempting to perform a directory listing before reporting success then follow the instructions here to switch to passive mode. Alternatively, can you connect to an anonymous FTP server? You should be able to connect from the command prompt as well as SmartFTP - just use the username "anonymous" and any password.

Don't worry about opening an incoming connection to ports 21 or 20 on your firewall - unless you're trying to host a FTP server on your own computer, of course. Your computer will choose a random port to use when connecting to the remote server - you don't need to worry about that. As long as your FTP program is allowed to make connections which, as you're able to get to the login stage it must be you should be ok. Should have said that earlier.

I increased the timeout as well. Last edited by SubJeff; 29th Dec at What happens if you deliberately try an incorrect username and password? For example, using FileZilla I get the following messages when connecting to your server: Code:. I'm using FileZilla now and I get this. OK - I suspect it's an ident problem. Your server is probably connecting back to your computer to see which user is associated with the FTP connection. It's pretty much archaic these days - do you have port redirected somewhere on your firewall?

I've no idea and no idea where to look to find out. Sorry - scrub that. I am on a local LAN I had XP and it worked flawlessly. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and now it will not work. They can telnet into the other computers all XP that are setup for the FTP receive but not mine, although they say they can ping mine. I have followed their instructions to the letter.

I also uninstalled Norton Internet Security and completely disabled the Windows Firewall, still does not work. I pasted the latest thread in the conversation with ADP tech guys below Are you able to ping the ADP side of the network?

Is the ADP side able to ping your Windows 7 computer properly? TechNet Subscriber Support. If you are TechNet Subscription user and have any feedback on our support quality, please send your feedback here. It's also the problem if you see an error message mentioning a "PORT" command. If you use a different FTP program, it almost certainly has a checkbox to turn on "passive mode" in either the connection setup screen or the program preferences screen.

Consult the documentation for your FTP program if you're unsure how to do it. The first thing we recommend is turning off any firewall software as a test. If this fixes the problem, consult your firewall's documentation or support to learn how to allow FTP connections with the firewall turned on. Encryption is not compatible with all firewalls. If that doesn't solve it, try connecting to a completely different public FTP server. This will show whether the problem is just with the connection to our FTP server or if your computer is having problems connecting to any FTP servers.
